Well if their so extremely distinct right. I mean I see the same boobs and muscles on every character except Akisame who was copied by Saiga and Senzu from what I can see(those two are acceptable actually). A style unique to one character is given to another and all we see is the first character. Sorry man, not all manga's can be judged the same.
Slightly OT since this is a Tokiwa thread. and lengthy answer (Maybe we should open a new thread for this topic)
It was more meant in a way that "it could have been worse". The female characters certainly only have the types "flat as a board" and "wtf are those real!?" with a few side characters that are somewhere in the middle between those two types.
But I think the male hcaratcers have a wider variety. it is true that most of them have some kind of muscular built going on, since they are all martial artist I still think that there is enough diversity amongst them. If you look closely I think you can notice that Akisame has a slightly different bult from Saiga/Senzui (those two are really similar).
The amount of bulk varies even for the heavily muscular characters (Sakaki/Apachai) and you still have their facial features and other traits to tell them apart.
And then there are
- very thin guys (Lugh, Kagerou)
- Frail old men (Freya's grandfather)
- regular weaklings (Niijima and most of his underlings)
- middle aged men that sometimes seem to have a bit a belly (Inspector Honmaki, Kenichi's father)
- the slightly chubby (Ukita)
- fat massive (Thor)
- just fat (Meatman)
- Kensei Ma
- and probably other characters I forgot about
And even when you compare the disciples who are all teenage boys, I can see differences as well as similarities. Just compare Kenichi with Kokin/Tanimoto with Ethan.
Overall I'm okay with the different types in this manga. Sure, there could be more, but they are not so similar that I can't tell anymore who's who.

Back on topic. I'm currenty trying to find out where the author got the pink-haired girl's name from. It's only written in kana (no kanji) りいん, which is pronounced Riin. But all official illustrations that have her name written out in the ROman alphabet have her name as "Rein".
So far I have found the English word "rein" as in the things you need to ride a horse. But it's not punounced anything like "riin"
The German "rein" an adjective meaning pure/clean/immaculate. But that one isn't pronounced riin either.
Japanese 吏員 = an official (person). Could it be that this is meant to be a title rather than a name?
Or is it something Matsuena made up? I hope we eventually get an explanation of some kind.

The Yokai dictionary really helps with understanding bits about this story. Now I know where to look when Kanata announces the name of some new monster/phenomena.
So far we've had Tenjō-name, Tenka, Azuki-togi, and that strange monster hand where I've yet to find out what it is called.
