  • The Elders's eyesight depends on his mood. It can be extremely good or when he feels like it he'll say he's old and his eyesight is horrible. Does this apply to hearing as well.

I would assume so. I guess we all know at least one person in real life who only hears well when they want to, but pretend to be almost deaf when it suits them. (I'm looking at you, Mrs. shop assistant in the shop downstairs)

Ma Kensei (馬 剣星)

Ki: Sei
Age: 42
Birthday: March 21
Height: 158 cm
Weight: 53 kg
Hobbies: Photography
Likes: Beautiful women
Dislikes: Snails
Dreams for the future: I want to live in a free world without any restraints.

  • The miraculous martial artists whose skill is the result of China’s 4000 year long martial arts history.
  • His bald head makes him feel his age.
  • His hard training made him able to use a multitude of techniques.
  • He is small and very light, which makes him very quick.
  • He needs this agility to escape from Shigure’s attacks when she’s chasing him again.
  • He can withstand extremely strong attacks which you would not believe when you first see him.
  • When he fight women he preferably uses techniques that undress his opponents rather than defeat them.
  • He uses a soft style of kenpo that often uses the opponent’s strength against him.
  • He’s a dirty old pervert whose main targets are Miu and Shigure. When he was young he was a normal boy who liked girls.
  • He may be a pervert, but he makes an exception for his daughter.
  • Ryouzanpaku’s only computer is in his room. But it’s full of porn so he usually keeps it a secret.
  • Although he’s got 100,000 disciples in China, Kenichi is his dear number one disciple who he teaches not only martial arts, but also many other things.
  • Miu, who he saw grow up, is like a real daughter to him. Yet he still harrases her.
  • He and his brother Sougetsu trained together while they grew up. They might have chosen different paths in life, but they still care and think fondly of each other.
  • He fled from China and doesn’t want to return, but he deeply loves his daughter Renka.
  • His uncle Ryou Ma somehow came to take care of his daughter. He is a very influential man in Kamakura’s Chinatown.
  • His wife takes care of the Phoenix Order while Kensei is gone. She’s a very scary woman, but since Kensei, who loves beautiful women, chose to marry her, she must be a beauty.
  • When he met his future wife Kensei was already bald and she was the one to attack him … in a very literal sense with fistst and kicks …. it seems.
  • As a youth he was very pretty and they called his the Shining Genji of China. Even now he keeps a picture of himself from the old days.
  • The Ma brothers don’t look very much alike. Kensei takes after their mother while Sougetsu resembles their father. Their parents were a “beauty and the beast”-like couple. Kensei’s baldness however is likely inherited from his father’s side, because his uncle Ryou Ma is bald as well.
  • Kensei has got three children. Renka and two young sons, who stayed behind in China with their mother. They must be very pretty as well and, of course, they are very good at martial arts just like their older sister.
  • Kensei also wrote words on the jars Kenichi uses during his training. Words like “love” and “willpower” show his typical Ma-sense.
  • Renka’s mother must have a great body just like her daughter. Yet Kensei refuses to return home, because he fears her. Since she able to lead the Phoenix Order she must be very strong, too.She has to be the most feared woman in more than one sense.

Ma Kensei is 42 years old now and his daughter 17, that means he was 25 when she was born and I guess he met her mother at least one year before that. => 23/24 at most.

That poor guy went bald in his early twenties. Fate can be cruel.

He must have looked so retarded :(. To be fair my dad was bald when I was born and he was 29 and looked really good(he had REALLY nice hair). So I am guessing he did not look to bad for them to have fucked and had 3 kids. Especially since it does not seem that the wife has cheated either. From this I am guessing she is more of a traditionalist with a flashy wild martial art justice side like her daughter.

Can anyone draw and use 17yo Kensei as a reference for an early twenties bald Kensei?

What if his wife did not marry him out of love but because of family politics?

Doubt it. The Ma family seems more free flow than anything else. Kensie can be a pretty charming guy if he really wants to(remember that samurai chick).

Also I doubt he was just as bald as he is now, he would just be a guy with less hair. He would most likely be balding and have a huge forehead or something like that.

Edit: also an incredibly threatening martial artist.

Kind of unrelated, but I'm struggling with a translation.

Kagerō Kii's nickname in Japanese is 鍔鳴りの紀伊陽炎 (Tsubanari no Kii Kagerō)

Tsubanari is the sound that is created when you put a sword back into its scabbard and the sword guard hits the opening.

That means, he is so fast you only notice he's moved when he has already put his sword back into its scabbard. Kind of like Lucky Luke who draws his guns faster than his own shadow.

Is there any way to turn this mess of an explanation into a good nickname that works in English? I can't come up with a word/phrase that even remotely close to the Japanese meaning of tsubanari.

Thank you, maybe a good idea will hit me one day. Probably when I'm waiting at a traffic light or when I'm just about to fall asleep.

I'm sorry Akisame's profile took me so long to translate. Some parts were a bit difficult for me to translate (I hope they turned out at least somewhat understandable), so I've alway put it off until now.

Kōetsuji Akisame (岬越寺秋雨)

Age: 39

Birthday: November 5

Height: 180 cm

Weight: 80 kg

Hobbies: Haiku, shogi, go

Likes: Soba water, abekawa mochi, india-ink paintings

Dislikes: Green peppers

Dreams for the future: I’m fine if I can live a steady life.

  • The unique juujutsu-ka who is equally skilled in arts as well as in theory.

  • His tachniques based on the judgement he makes with his theories, and create the sublime Kōetsuji-jūjutsu style that has a delicate sense to it.

  • He possesses a miraculous ability to learn. Even when it was his first time using a PC it was enough for him to look at Niijima’s techniques in order to take possession of it.

  • His mustache is sacred. It took him extraordinary effort to grow it since he was in his 20s. Even children would not be allowed to touch it.

  • No matter where he goes, he does not have to worry about language problems. He speaks about 70 to 80 percent of all human languages -  fluently without any accent.

  • His body is nothing but utterly perfect pink muscle, which he built up with the knowledge from his studies.

  • He is the embodiment of artistic talent. He is generally ot top of everything. Recently, his favourite readings are Russian literature.

  • He’s actually able to drive and he’s also able to read directions written in Russian while driving.

  • He’s able to rush like the wind and will appear next to someone as if he had teletransported there.

  • His speciality is to use three techniques at once - a throw, a blow to a vital point  and one targeting the joints. He takes immense care that his opponent absolutely does not die.

  • His abilities as a doctor are divine and he it even called “God’s hand”. However he emits a scary aura during surgeries which scares the other doctors.

  • kenichi reminds him of himself when his was young. He might not have any talent whatsoever, but they share the same beliefs.  For Akisame Kenichi is the greatest experi… disciple!

  • Even when he and his disciple were fighting in different locations, their feelings were in unison.

  • James Shiba is his favourite rival. He jovially calls him “Shibacchi”, but the beard controversy between them is serious business. Could it be that he is somewhat envious of Shiba’s thick beard!?

  • He gave Shigure her name. The circumstances of their meeting were curious, but now she is like a daughter to him.

  • He shares the same  like for sadistic training training methods with his old friend Taiki Yamamoto. Their greeting becomes fiercer with every time they meet. They have the same view when it comes to raising disciples.

  • Saiga Fūrinji was his best friend. They created numerous legends together when they were still friends. The current state that they turned into enemies is…

  • He and Hayato Fūrinji both like the animal picture scrolls. They secretly go shopping together for those ludicrously expensive scrolls.

  • When he heard that Saiga had a child he erected a statue of the goddess Kannon in a certain village. The place has become a famous power sport for those seeking divine blessings when they want to have children, find love or pray for the wellbeing of their families.

  • He can be really stubborn, to the point of being extremely blunt with other people. he does not coddle the other as it does not benefit them, which makes his seem cruel at times.

  • His timing for giving praise is exquisite. He knows that anger alone does not suffice to raise people. He will not fail to give praise when it’s warranted.

  • Raising a diciple brings him the greatest joy. This is the first time he is teaching someone martial arts. It’s a new endeavor that he enjoys the most right now. And he becomes all excited when he comes up with a new training method and can’t wait to try it out.

  • He tends to worry too much. He worries especially that his hand or feelings might not reach the other.

  • Could he actually be a loner!? It pains him when his friends go out somewhere to have fun and he doesn’t know about it. Like when Sakaki and Kenichi secretly skip training and go out to eat ramen together.

  • The children who did the short training under Akisame had a turning point in their lives on that day. Each one bloomed in various fields like art or martial arts.

  • There are actually quite a lot of things he dislikes..!? he appears to be completely flawless, but in reality has has quite a few weaknesses. His extremely keen senses cause him some trouble. (His sensitive skin doesn’t like strong sunlight, so he fully dressed even at the pool. His delicate tongue can’t deal with the bitter flavour of green peppers. He cannot stand the cold.)

  • He is able to tell who’s talking behind his back from the feeling he gets when he has to sneeze. [A/N: There’s  a Japanese superstition that you have to sneeze when someone is talking about you.)

  • His “Japanese hospitality” is unrivaled. Not only is he able to speak in various language, but he also is a master at tea ceremony.

  • Could the Akisame-like common sense change the world!? He can turn upside down whatever someone is unable to do with common knowledge by just saying “That’s common sense”. Something like that is an unreasonable demand for an ordinary person.

  • When he was a small child he was bullied for being such a genius despite his weak condition. Because of that he really understands what it does to someone when  they are irrationally bullied.

  • How long does it take him to complete a statue!? It depends on how much effort a piece takes. He can complete a simple one in several seconds. An elaborate one takes about a month.

  • It seems that when Kenichi comes running to him with his troubles he’s having dorayaki for a snack at that moment… It appears to be some kind of foreboding.

  • By the way, to great buddha statue in his room of statues was made to be for throwing practice, too. Furthermore, he’s paying himself for the statues and the training machines he makes.

My comment about this: How can one single person be so blessed? What is your secret, Akisame?

As some who has somewhat of a background withh languages and linguistics (albeit only a little bit), the extend of his language abilities has shocked me the most.

Depending on the source the estimate of all languages is about 6500 to 7000 different languages. (Most of them are very rare though.) Now take 70 to 80% of that. Akisame's ability concerning languages is completely and utterly insane. I have always thought he knew maybe about 10 to 20 different languages. Seems my estimate was waaaaaaaaaaaaay off.

And it's not only that he has some knowledge about a language and can make himself understood. No, he completely fluent without any accent. I've been learning English since I was in 5th grade and yet I still struggle with it and my pronounciation is awful. This amout of genius is incredible to me, even for a fictional character. I'm awe-struck.

Well learning a language is not as difficult as you say. Being completely fluent is flabbergasting, but knowing the basics of any language probably is a key to it. From their, along with knowing so much about history, it can be derived that he studied everything.... wtf Akisame. Y u su smerit.

This man is not human any longer even compared to the other masters.

I would not be surprised if the Japanese goverment had already declared him a living national treasure. I'm sure once he dies he will be revered as a god and replace Tenjin/Sugawara no Michizane in his function. I mean, people are already praying to his statues for good fortune.

<p>Kokin's profile doesn't say a single word about bullying.

  • He's great at profiling and psychological warfare
  • His master doesn't only tech him martial arts, but also manners and how to assess situations, etc.
  • He values his master extremely high
  • Doesn't talk that much
  • Very logical and cold-blooded and thorough (like when he checked whether Kenichi is really dead)
  • Usually doesn't betray any emotion and has a great poker face
  • His cool character, good manners and looks make him popular with the girls
  • The black and white parts of his eyes are reversed, because he's a character whose thoughts don't reflect in his eyes. He's a mysterious character and possesses superior cognitation like Akisame, which is expressed by his white eyes.

This really makes me wish he got a flashback or his origin told. Kokin by far is the most interesting YOMI for me because of his different approach to battle than anyone else in the series. He isn't the sort to just walk up and start a fight. He gets in your head and messes your game up before you even do anything. He and Agaadd seemed to have a good relationship and I'm upset we didn't see more of it.

We didn't see more of the entire manga, much rather their father-son relationship.

I would make a reasonable assumption that 70-80% of all language means 70-80% of national languages, including dialects, so something like 200?

It's unreasonable, even in a fictional setting, for Akisame to be able to speak 4000+ languages without an accent, even if he had the genius to do so. The reason is logistics. Most of these languages are very rare and spoken only in their region, sometimes in a very small and specific region. It is unreasonable for Akisame to have the money, or even the time (Akisame is not exactly the kind of person to live a life of aimless self-fulfillment), to travel to all of these locales and study how the languages are spoken so that he can speak it back without an accent.

Even if Akisame could, and did, travel so much, the people around him cannot keep up with his learning speed. Even if a person can replicate a dialect perfectly after listening to it once, it will take months before the people around him spoke with him enough to give him a reasonable base of vocabulary for him to be considered even just knowledgeable in a language.

But even 200 languages is already a level of genius nearly unimaginable.

Actually I can see exactly why Ma's wife met him and fell in love with him. Ma is diminutive and unassuming. He doesn't even look that strong from outside. So when they were young she probably tried to challenge him because of his fame as one of the two strongest fighters in China. He would have told her that there is no need to fight when they could make love or something stupid like that, but delivered with utmost sincerity and gentleness and without a single ounce of insecurity, aka. that Ma-style charm. She fought him anyway, but was defeated by his restriction technique. Then afterward he put her clothes back on and walk away, saying sorry that he uttered something inappropriate. Done, she fell in love HARD, because he was the direct opposite of her, obviously more powerful, but also quite gentlemanly and sweet.

By the way, I'm also balding now, and only in my early 30's...

My friend was balding in his teens... you could see his scalp kinda through his hair it was that thin. Hair was still where it should be but it was not very densely populated. Super insecure about his hair so I guess Ma would be a little upset about being called an old man in his early 20's

On the one hand what you say is very reasonable and it makes more sense to me that he's able to speak 200 languages instead of 4000+. That number is just way too huge.

On the other hand the phrasing used in the guidebook makes it seem like they really mean all languages, even the ones with only two native speakers left somewhere on a remote island in the middle of nowhere. Maybe Matsuena and his team were not quite aware of how many languages exists and thought the number was much lower.

Furthermore Akisame doesn't have to actually travel to all of these remote places in order to learn their language, all he needs is access to a university library that specializes in languages. Even at the library of the small uni in my town I've come across materials about some rather obscure languages. For examble I've once held a book about Ryukyuan languages in my hands and one of the Professors here specializes in Tungusic languages. I'm sure the famous Universities in Tokyo have much larger language departments and the corresponding resources. I would not put it past Akisame to be able to (almost) perfectly learn a language solely from books and audio/video material without direct contact to a native speaker.

I wished the guidebook had given more information about that point than the two short sentences we have.

He is a fictionally insanely brilliant character, having a limitless style learning curve is his thing. He forged his heart and gave himself essentially infinite conviction/focus. No doubt he can learn 4000+ laungages.
