Computers, servers, software, firmware.

This is where we can talk about anything technology.

Boast about your setup ^.^

I personally have an ACER running Ubuntu 12.04 with 3GB RAM, dual-core 2GHz processor, and intel graphics.

Not the greatest, but clearly shows the superiority of linux over Windows on "okay" computers.

The setup I'm currently running is some Dell running Vista (eww..) w/ 3GB RAM, quad-core @ 2.4GHz, and an HIS Radeon HD 6850.

So ready to get upgrade.

I have this windows thing.

.................................
Did you really just say Windows Vista??
What is WRONG with you?

The rest of the setup seems fine. I don't quite know how well the AMD Raedon HD 6850 performs, but I'm pretty sure its good.
Do you know what DirectX it supports?

Yeah.. I'm gonna upgrade it to 7 very soon along with pretty much everything except the video card and PSU, since they're both new.

*checks dxdiag*

Running DirectX11.

I have this windows thing. lol

Duuuude, me too. :P

Windows thing is the best.

Good! I haven't really had any problems with 7 so far.
Except for the fact that it's Winodws >_>

I was having you check the DirectX to see how old it was, but you alread knew it was new...

I would recommend Linux to you, but AMD doesn't have any good drivers for their ATI cards.
If you had and Intel chipset or NVidia card, I wouldn't hesitate to point you to Ubuntu

And NO. Windows "thing" is called "thing" for a reason.
Because it certainly is not an OS

I like windows lol... I hated linux and mac is just over priced POS... Good for music bix though lol.

Let me rephrase that:

Windows is great, on a great machine.
If you try to put it on a computer that is only so-so (or worse) it will annoy you to death.

I like linux because of the security, speed, and customization of it.
Why do you hate it?

(mac IS overpriced -.-)

Windows 7 is good on pretty much any machine.

Vista, however is a nightmare.

No. It's not.

For instance, on the laptop I'm using right now (secondary, I left my main linux laptop at my dad's), It runs like crap.
The processor is only a dual-core 1.3 GHz Intel.
It has 2 GB of ram (which is fine for windows) and a relatively good ATI Radeon 6310.

The difference between speed and multi-tasking between a 1.3GHz Dual-core and a 2GHz dual-core is amazing.
But even with a 2GHz dual-core, 3GB RAM and a newer Intel graphics card, Windows 7 ran only "okay" on my main computer.
Hence the reason for switching to Linux.

Windows 7 is still pretty awesome though. You just need a really good processor.

Just never liked it my friend had me try and I was like this sucks. Ive always been microsoft fan boy so it just Bias I guess lol. I do agree it can suck on a sucky computer... Windows 8 may of fixed that lol.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Windows 8 has REALLY high system requirements. You have to have something like 4GB of ram, a 3.2GHz Dual-core processor, and DirectX11 compatable video card...
Just to run it. Let alone good.

I know because I wanted to put the consumer release (beta) on my computer. That didn't work out so well :/

Which one did he have you try? Because there ARE a LOT of sucky ones out there.

EDIT: They lowered the system requirements to 1GHz processor, 2GB RAM and a directX9 graphics card because they want you to install it on tablets.

That was statement about W8 however... The crappy junk that I have can barely run windows xp. Emachines back from long time ago... Never get one.

You know what runs great on eemachines??

Linux.

I suggest LUbuntu or Debian for older computers.
If it's too old for that even, you can try DamnSmallLinux or Puppy Linux, though i've never really liked either.

I won't go farther than that.

What kind of specs does your eemachine have?

My laptop was worse than that and w7 ran like a champ.

Single core Intel @ 2.2GHz, 3GB RAM, integrated gfx.

My friend's which was worse than that ran it fine.
single core amd @ 1.6Ghz, 2GB Ram, integrated gfx.

Could very well be because we had 64-bit, but I doubt it.

Daktyl198

I have 64 bit on this laptop as well...
Weird.

I have this laptop running at peak condition as well.
But it takes almost 25 seconds to open my Web Browser!! (at first boot)
Granted, it's the alpha build of firefox, but IE takes almost as long, if not longer at times.
I think it may have something to so with some of the drivers (this is an ACER...)

If you say it ran that well, I think I will try it clean on my friends computer.
I built his out of 2 that he had lying around, taking the best parts from each. It now has a single-core, 2.8GHz processor, 1.5GB RAM and integrated gfx.

I would have already tried it, but I didn't think the gfx was powerful enough for Win7

Let's talk about how awful Firefox is. All of its over the top branding is too much.

I use Safari for Windows.

I switched over to Chrome for good now since ff kept locking up my system.
