Yes. I typically remember people based on their avatar and not on their actual name to be honest. So if a person changes their name and not their avatar then I know it's them but if they only change their avatar then it takes me some time before I realize who that person is.

Pretty much what Rimi said.
I look at avatars and remember them. If they change, I look at the name and then remember their new avatar.
There are some people I recognize by the way they post, but that only happens after I've been around them for a long time.

For online forums and such, I usually don't see avatars as much past just what they are, which is avatars. I associate it with the user like I would any other avatar.
