Do you get motivated by fiction?

I've recently taken up kickboxing, with plans to eventually take a complete MMA program. Until recently, fighting/sports hasnt been on my mind(I don't even watch them on TV, except for the largest events), so choosing this is a pretty big break from the norm. For me to start working towards a fighting career, especially while attending college, takes more than just a random impulse; I would have to say History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is partly responsible.
I've always been easily motivated by works of fiction, but my highly rational(and somewhat lazy) nature usually keeps me a bit restrained. Lately, i just decided "What the heck, I'll be a fighter!" I've managed to filter my newfound fighting ambition through my typically rational brain, and I'm still doing it anyway; Now I find myself In intense Hour-long classes at an MMA gym thinking "If Kenichi could handle this, so can I."

I have no illusions about the difficulty of becoming a fighter, especially while also trying to succeed in school, but i'm still compelled to do it. I never would have even consifered this, but my desire to be more exceptional(and less lazy) is fueling me, and HSDK gave me a direction to channel that energy, even thought I would have considred it pretty rediculous before.

I know people who've decided to pursue everything from graphic arts to video game design because of their exposure to multimedia, so I want to know if anyone else here has had the same experience of being motivated or directed by a work of fiction.

Yeah I guess fiction plays its part in getting people interested, I know people who have wanted to start boxing after seeing Rocky for example and I reckon loads of people have taken up kung fu or jeet kune do after watching Bruce Lee films so yeah manga probably has the same effect.

I use to do tae kwon do and attempted to add boxing and judo as well because I thought it'd be fun to practice three sports focusing on very different disciplines at once (probably got the idea from Kenichi) which it was, but had to drop judo straight away because my body needed more rest time in between lessons. Kenichi can only do it because he has Akisame to keep him from dying!

Can't say something like this has happened to me. As far as motivation goes some anime might make me excited or "pumped up" but beyond that nothing.

Still that's pretty cool though. Kenichi is a very inspiring character in my opinion. I wonder what Matsuena would say if he knew about this. I know you're not the only one that pursued martial arts because of this manga. I know some people try to learn the moves kenichi learned at the beginning.

Motivated, yes. Motivated enough to go and do something, no.

I don't think fiction has ever motivated me to do something. The most fiction has ever done to me is evoke a small emotional response.

It's inspired me before, not so much as motivated...well, actually, if you count manga as fiction, then it has kind of inspired me to want to get better at drawinf.

I'm curious to know what kind of software lets you animate in the first place. Even if it is paid.

Really? I've just googled it and theres a few free open source ones for both 2d and 3d animations. I've never tried to use any so I don't know how good they are, but google around and check some forums and you'll usually get a lot of opinions about what's good and not.

I'd be really suprised if there isn't though, for video games you get loads of really simple ones all the way upto ones like the unreal development kit for free.

Adobe Flash is one I know of, though it's not the kind you'd use to make like anime type animations.

American companies like to use Toon Boom, especially Disney.
