Some more news. Kimi wa 008 volume 1 has an estimated print run of about 80-90k copies.

It was #53 in Shoseki's weekly ranking. Keep in mind that it went on sale an a Friday and had only 3 days to contribute to its ranking.

There aren't any exact numbers, but then manga ranked #50 sold 12600 copies and #100 sold 8250 copies. I think it's safe to assume that 008 sold 10.000+ copies within 3 days.

Its daily Shoseki ranking went: 25 -> 28 -> 43

Mr. Matsuena want to thank everyone who bought his manga. (tweet)

[EDIT] Today's chapter 13 comes with a very pretty color page. You can buy the digital version of Shonen Sunday easily on Ebook Japan. You can actually see it when you click the reading sample button on that page. It's the blue one that says 立ち読み.

I've seen other people write that they get their digital version from Webry, respectively Webry's app, but I haven't tried then yet an cannot say whether they accept foreign credit cards and google pay accounts or not.

  • The ebook is out since last Friday.
  • Weekly Shoseki sales ranking: #59. (#50 sold 14150 copies, #100 sold 7850 copies. So that's another 10.000+ copies sold last week)
  • Daily ranking (including week 1): 25 -> 28 -> 43 -> 23 -> 46 -> 62 -> 94 -> 89 -> 88 -> 116
  • The company that does the cover designs for Matsuena's works posted a few images.
  • A blog entry with a few more impressions of volume 1.
  • A few panels have been uncensored for the volume release. That's a new thing. Before it was always magazine = volume, as far as I'm aware.

Volume 1 stayed in Shoseki Ranking's top 500 for 5 weeks until it dropped out.
Unfortunately it never made it into the weekly top 50.
Someone estimated that about 35.000 copies were sold during those 5 weeks.

If you like looking at tables here are the weekly and daily rankings.

The store bonus illustration at animate is sold out, but Toranoana and Gamers still have some left.

Since chapter 1 is available on Webry I thought I might attempt to translate it.  The translation is all kinds of awful, but I tried.

Corrections are very much welcome. I hate English.

Why hasn't this been fan-translated anyways? Or even the rest of TK!!? What's up with that?

Delirium Trigger

Thank you so much, by the way.

You're welcome.
They probably aren't translated yet, because nobody felt like doing it.

Volume 2 is up for pre-order now.

CDJ, amazon, honto

I think this illustration might be a preview of the cover. That or it's going to be the next color page.

That's pretty sad, honestly. Are you enjoying it so far? Is it better than TK!!?

The story is pretty solid so far and 008 has the advantage that it doesn't have to pack 3 main characters into one story. It just takes me a while to get used to the new characters. I think it has the potential to be good.

Chapter 22 came with a short agent quiz with a bonus illustration as the prize. You can try solving it, or you can ask twitter for help. ;)

Late, but if you want to tackle the quiz yourself, don't click the twitter link above.
  • What does the C in CIA stand for? (6)
  • What's the name of the ultra-high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, nicknamed Dragon Lady, that's build by Lockheed and operated by the United States Air Force? (1)
  • What's the French word for spy? (2)
  • What was the most surprising thing Mr. Matsuena found on his way? (1)
  • How do you write agent in alphabet? (2)
Obviously the last question doesn't quite work when you translate it into a language that uses the roman alphabet.
Question 4 is something you cannot answer if you don't speak Japanese and don't read the magazine. The word he's looking for is "inko".

The url is http : //www.m-bros . net/~wazadepa/008/xxxxx . html Remove the extra spaces and replace the xxxxx with your answer. Have fun.

One translation group announced that they want to translate Kimi wa 008. They are only a small group consisting of a bunch of students who translate in their free time, so it's going to take a while. I hope their translator is good and not some incompetent hack like that spinyback guy who mangled Tokiwa.

You mean the one who did the last two chapters?

Nacchi

Posted August 11 2018 - 06:17 AM

No, the one who did chapter 1 - 14ish. The ones that use fugly watermarked Chinese scans. Every time he could not read or understand what's written he would make up random garbage that's got nothing to do with the original dialogue. This is especially noticalble with the small handwritten text.

Delirium Trigger

Oh. I figured something was up. I wonder if I can find the original Chinese scans. Definitely not fluent but I know how to translate it to an extent.

Volume 2 is out as of today and Sunday webry has a reading sample. Click the white button that says 立ち読み. Webry users can already buy the ebook from them, but I have no idea if they accept foreign customers. All other stores get the ebook on August 24, 1 week after the print release.

Nacchi

The ebook is out now and Masuena's staff announced on twitter that there is going to be another quiz in next week's (or was it the week after that?) issue. The prize for solving is will be another bonus illustration, it seems.
